The subalpine areas come alive in spring and early summer. Rarities like the Rock Thrush, Blue Rock Thrush or Rock bunting, elusive butterflies like the exclusive Parnasius Apollo or the scarce Chapman´s Ringlet and wonderful orchids and other amazing flowers can be found 1,000 metres above sea level making this an unforgettable wildlife watching experience in the Picos de Europa National Park.
Late May and June are, by far, the best options to explore these areas. At this time, the birds are calling and displaying their territorial behavior. Besides, raptors like the Golden Eagle, Short-Toed Eagle, Lammergeier and others can be located without much difficulty.
All paths are well established, with minimum difficulty; most of them belonged to old mines long since abandoned. Indeed, this is an easy but fabulous way to explore these rugged areas, a veritable gateway to an unforgettable landscape and its unique wildlife.
